There is e There are – Significado, Regras de Uso e Exercícios

  • Have a ball on the roof. (errado!)

É aí que entra o there is e o there are: são eles que ocupam esse lugar na hora de indicar a existência de alguma coisa. O exemplo acima, portanto, precisaria estar da seguinte maneira:

  • There is a ball on the roof. (certíssimo!).

Mas por que não usar o have? A explicação é simples.

There is X There are

Regras de uso do There is e There are

  • There is a new student in the classroom.
  • There are two new students in the classroom.

Para isso, fez uso do there is. Já na segunda sentença, como o sujeito indicou a existência de dois novos estudantes, ele fez uso do there are. Sem mistérios!

Forma afirmativa

There is X There areExemplos:
  • There is a new smartphone in the store;
  • There are new smartphones in the store.

Forma negativa

There is X There areExemplos:
  • There is not a new smartphone in the store;
  • There are not a new smartphone in the store.

O sentindo, entretanto, muda:

  • There is no new smartphone in the store.

Forma interrogativa

Para a forma interrogativa, é preciso que o verbo to be passe ao início da sentença, antes do there:

There is X There areExemplos:
  • Is there a new smartphone in the store?
  • Are there a new smartphone in the store?
  • Is there not a new smartphone in the store?
  • Are there not a new smartphone in the store?
